Injunry and Protective Behavior in Elderly

Abstract

|
This descriptive study was done to identify the frequencies and types of injuries in the elderly living at home, and to investigate the level of safety behavior. For the study, 350 elderly in Seoul were surveyed through a structured questionnaire from November 10 to 15 in 2000. The data was analysed using SPSS program.
The results were as follow:
1. More than one-forth (26.6%) of respondents experienced a injury during last one year.
2. In types of injury, falls were 78.7% and traffic accidents, 13.8%.
The dangerous environment (50.5%) and carelessness (36.6%) were recognized as main causes.
3. The accidents happen walking on stairs (0.5%) at home, and on street (73.7%) outdoors. The accidents were more frequent in winter (71.0%), and during daytime(45.2%).
4. Most of trauma injured buttock (22.7%), leg (17.6%), knee (14.3%) in its order.
5. More than half of elderly (64.5%) experienced accompanied complications after trauma, with further treatment (2.8%) or without any treatment(46.7%).
6. The level of protective behaviors in elderly was not significantly different from their injury experiences.
On the basis of this study we suggest the following :
1. We suggest the further study to apply variables of the socioeconomical level and living areas.
2. We suggest to develop a systematic and standardized tool to measure protective behaviors in elderly.
